Fire Can Reduce Thorn Damage by the Invasive Callery Pear Tree

چکیده

Callery pear ( Pyrus calleryana ) is an invasive tree across much of the eastern United States that can form dense thickets, and branches stems are often covered in sharp thorns. Landowners land managers attempting to manage callery infestations faced with challenge killing and/or removing trees while also avoiding thorn damage equipment, which lead wasted time increased costs. We evaluated fire as management tool reduce likelihood equipment from Branches were collected field killed by herbicide, untreated trees, half each group then burned a propane garden torch simulate low-intensity prescribed fire. After treatment, all returned either old or forest floor for 1 year, after puncture strength was compared freshly cut Herbicide treatment location did not affect strength, but burning reduced thorns would tire. Fire tip width, sharpness. Burning wood fungi proliferated on year forest. Both factors likely contributed decreasing probability puncture. Our results show using weaken dull their tips, reducing chance costs associated clearing this species. Leaving ground fungal colonization, may damage. Prescribed be part effective integrated plan this, possibly other, thorny flora.

How damage diversification can reduce systemic risk.

We study the influence of risk diversification on cascading failures in weighted complex networks, where weighted directed links represent exposures between nodes. These weights result from different diversification strategies and their adjustment allows us to reduce systemic risk significantly by topological means. As an example, we contrast a classical exposure diversification (ED) approach w...

How can we reduce the mortality of invasive pneumococcal disease?

I n this issue of the European Respiratory Review, LUDWIG et al. [1] present an article highlighting the continuous burden caused by invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD). Demographic changes due to the growing elderly population will further increase this problem. Bacterial infections of the upper and lower airways are most frequently caused by pneumococci in both adults and children, and pneumo...

Steel Buildings Damage Classification by damage spectrum and Decision Tree Algorithm

Results of damage prediction in buildings can be used as a useful tool for managing and decreasing seismic risk of earthquakes. In this study, damage spectrum and C4.5 decision tree algorithm were utilized for damage prediction in steel buildings during earthquakes. In order to prepare the damage spectrum, steel buildings were modeled as a single-degree-of-freedom (SDOF) system and time-history...

Treatment by Moringa oleifera extract can reduce gingival inflammatory cytokines in the rat periodontal model

Introduction: Overproduction of gingival pro-inflammatory cytokines have been implicated to play a noticeable role in the pathogenesis of periodontitis, which is characterized by host-mediated destruction of soft and hard periodontal tissues. Moringa oleifera (MO) is a highly valued medicinal plant which has a wide impressive range of traditional medical applications and is an alternative medic...

Invasive Fire Ants Reduce Reproductive Success and Alter the Reproductive Strategies of a Native Vertebrate Insectivore

BACKGROUND Introduced organisms can alter ecosystems by disrupting natural ecological relationships. For example, red imported fire ants (Solenopsis invicta) have disrupted native arthropod communities throughout much of their introduced range. By competing for many of the same food resources as insectivorous vertebrates, fire ants also have the potential to disrupt vertebrate communities. ME...
